US 41 NB at Catfish Creek Bridge
The US 41 NB Bridge over Catfish Creek is composed of a cast in place flat slab superstructure supported by prestressed concrete pile bents. The structure is located in an extremely aggressive tidal environment. Use of concrete admixtures and appropriate concrete cover was needed. In order to match and tie to the adjacent SB bridge, PGA used vertical abutment walls at the end bent. Using a sheet pile system was not viable due to the presence of shallow cap rock, traditional end bent wall systems. The bridge utilized an innovative soldier/king pile system using prestressed concrete piles and precast concrete panels. This innovative abutment wall system allowed the contractor to construct the abutment walls without having to do any forming in the water. The soldier piles were predrilled below the cap rock layer to ensure adequate lateral stability.
PGA was the engineer of record for the structure and was a subconsultant to Element Engineering Group. PGA also provided QC support for the bridge hydraulics and drainage on the project.
The bridge was officially completed and opened to traffic in April 2019.
